The Datatool DiGi is a digital gear indicator [DiGI] aimed at riders of both sports bikes and sports-tourers. Like F1 and top of the range sports cars, motorcycles are fitted with close ratio sequential gearboxes, which means that it is possible to lose track of which gear is selected. The Datatool DiGI was initially only suitable for motorcycles fitted with both electronic speedometer and electronic rev counter, as opposed to cable driven devices. This presented no problem for most modern sports motorcycles, (CBR’s, ZXR’s, GSXR’s, r1 & R6) but some older models, many sports tourers and most Ducatis have electronic rev counters with cable speedometers. So the British manufacturer, who built their reputation on electronic motorcycle security, developed a converter-kit for mechanical speedos. It is simple to fit, with 6 mini magnets that fit around the brake disc mounting points and a sensor that fits neatly to the fork leg. This generates pulses, just like an electronic speedo and can be wired into the standard DiGi. The system relates pulses between the speedometer & rev counter and, once installed and set up, indicates the gear ratio selected. The DiGI is waterproof and shockproof with an anti-glare lens. It is even light sensitive, getting progressively dimmer as conditions get darker, to stop the read-out dazzling the rider. Fitting is relatively simple, with only 6 colour-coded wires to contend with, of which only 5 need to be connected to the motorcycle. The DiGI can be mounted on the handlebars, attached to the fairing or next to the instruments, using the 3M Dual Lock pad provided. The standard Datatool DiGI sells at £59.00 including vat. The Cable Speedo Version sells at £99.00.
